How to use the lookup

1. Search by code or phrase. Enter an exact code such as 99214, or use a description phrase such as office visit. Exact code matches are ranked first.
2. Read the components. Review Work RVU, PE RVU for non-facility and facility settings, and MP RVU in the result row.
3. Continue with the selected code. Open the RVU calculator from the result row to add locality, setting, conversion factor, and participant assumptions.

How to read the RVU columns

RVUs are relative values used as inputs to a payment calculation. They are not dollar amounts and should be kept with the data year and setting used for the estimate.

Work RVU

The physician-work component, including the time, technical skill, and professional judgment associated with a service.

PE RVU non-facility

The practice-expense value used for a non-facility setting, where the practice generally bears more of the service resources.

PE RVU facility

The practice-expense value used when the facility setting accounts for facility resources separately.

MP RVU

The professional-liability or malpractice component used in the RVU formula.

Facility vs. non-facility context

The facility and non-facility columns primarily change the practice-expense component. They are not a substitute for selecting the correct code, place of service, modifier, or payer policy.

• Use the column that matches the setting being reviewed.
• Keep the setting assumption visible when you copy or export a result.
• Do not label either RVU column as a universal price for the code.

From lookup to payment estimate

A code-level estimate needs more than the lookup row. The RVU calculator combines the selected code and setting with GPCI locality values, a conversion factor, and the participant assumption selected in the worksheet.

1. Open the calculator link beside the code.
2. Confirm the code, data year, setting, locality, and participant status.
3. Record the displayed components and assumptions with the estimate.

Data source and usage limits

This lookup uses the CMS 2026 Physician Fee Schedule PFS Main File, released in April 2026. The description shown in the results comes from the file’s DESCRIPTION field.
